The performance was part of Sebastian Winkler’s exhibition “Prison Boys” and shown during Warsaw Gallery Weekend.
The Island is a choreographic-sound performance created as a result of a dialogue with the paintings of Sebastian Winkler and the works of the surrealist queer couple Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, who were sentenced to death for their surrealist anti-fascist actions on the Isle of Jersey during World War II. In this performance, Nauman explores the similarities and boundaries between art and crime from the perspective of a Polish-Jewish lesbian.
